Color work help

I’m making this Advent calendar and am stuck at the beginning. Let me preface this by saying I haven’t done much colorwork in my life, and none in the past 10 years or so. The first row of the pattern is all knit with the main color. The second and third rows say this:

Row 2: Pull both yarns to the front with the first color to work on top. Purl into each stitch with its matching color, floating the other color over the working yarn.
Row 3: Purl into each stitch with its matching color, floating the other color under the working yarn.

I’m really struggling with how to place the yarn so it’s “over” or “under.”

I know now this is a huge ask, but can someone try to explain how I need to place my yarn so it’s over or under, or point me toward a YouTube video that explains it?

@JenC it looks like the first two rolls they want purled to help the cuff roll - which seems to be a design element.

So - you should hold both colors to the front to purl (like normal) and just purl with the color shown in the chart. The strands carried won’t show because the cuff looks like it will roll to cover it.

So - knits you hold in back, purls you hold in front.

does this make sense and help?

edit to say the over / under thing I believe may just be to ensure the color purled is accurate?

You’re right about the roll, but there’s something about the over/under that makes the contrasting color look like it’s going in different directions.
If I could do it right, there would be two rows with white stitches like this:
\ \ \ \
/ / / / /

When I do it, it looks like two rows like this:
/ / / / /
/ / / / /

Am I allowed to love you !?!?!? :joy::rofl::joy::rofl: That’s exactly what it is! Wow. I can’t believe how much of my life I’ve spent as a knitter who hasn’t pushed the envelope. I can say I’ve been knitting for more than 50 years and that sounds all amazing but I really still have so much to learn. Thank you so much for figuring this out for me!!

I have never done one of those myself, but it looks very pretty so maybe I should expand.
