Did you get the top fixed by now? If not, consider replacing the whole top piece with actual hardwood.
Those Swiss army knives are great. They have so many tools. My husband has one and the kids all got one when they were old enough. I even have a mini one around here somewhere.

I haven’t done anything with it yet. I believe the whole cabinet is solid walnut but veneered in places for aesthetic reasons (for example, the bookend grain matching on the front drawer). If I wind up removing the veneer, I might just leave it as-is (after refinishing it) if the grain looks nice.
